ABSU SUG VICE-PRESIDENTIAL RESCHEDULED ELECTION

The attention of Management, Abia State University Uturu (ABSU) has been drawn to series of unsubstantiated reports in the social media, and letters from a group said to be the National Association of Imo State Students in respect of the nullified Students Union Government (SUG) Election for the post of the Vice-President which was rescheduled to hold at a later date.

We wish to state again that the reason for the nullification and rescheduling of the said election was subsequent upon a petition by some persons and the report of a properly constituted panel on the matter which discovered that one of the contestants was disqualified in error by the electoral body of the University. Hence the Management in its good wisdom and for purposes of inclusiveness and fairness directed the conduct of a rescheduled election for the position to accommodate all contestants.

It is therefore preposterous and purely embarrassing for any student or group to insinuate clannish and ethnic bias in a purely administrative action to promote peace, fairness which has been the character of all SUG electoral processes in the University over the years.

Abia State University under the watch of our Staff and Student friendly Vice Chancellor Distinguished Professor Onyemachi M. Ogbulu has remained steadfast in upholding the principles of equity, fairness and justice and has zero tolerance to all forms of ethnic sentiments in his administration and to allude to the contrary in a matter even as the SUG Vice-Presidential election is utterly embarrassing and disrespectful to his exalted office and the University Management.

While the inalienable right of any student of the University or their representatives to ventilate their grievances through the appropriate channels is guaranteed, Students should be aware that denigrating the office of the Vice-Chancellor and the Institution in public domain is not part of the matriculation oath they swore to uphold and such has its attendant consequences.

The Vice-Chancellor on behalf of Management hereby warn all those fanning the fire of ethnic hatred especially among these twin brothers, Abia and Imo States to quickly desist from such, while all law abiding students are advised to go about their normal academic activities which is the principal reason of their gaining admission into this great citadel of learning.

The contestants in the rescheduled election are also encouraged to participate fully without fear of interference from any individual or body as Management assures of its support to the eventual winner of the election.

All concerned to be properly guided.
